Bolton Conservatives have won a vote at Bolton Council which will stop the local authority from participating in a scheme to build council homes only for asylum seekers. The scheme, proposed by the Labour government, would see the council build homes that could not be occupied by British citizens.
Given the lack of affordable housing in Bolton, the Conservatives tabled a motion at a meeting of the Council. By forcing a vote, the Conservatives issue was brought to a head in public. The vote was won and now the Labour council must respect the decision of local councillors.
We're standing up for you at Bolton Council. Despite the Labour Government pushing councils to build new council homes for asylum seekers, we've won a vote to stop this happening in Bolton. We believe in a Bolton-first approach. This is a significant victory for common sense.
Leader of Bolton Conservatives, Cllr Nadim Muslim, said:
It's baffling to think that the Labour government thought this was a good idea. It's only because of a Conservative motion at Council, brought by Cllr John Walsh, that we have secured this commitment from Bolton Council. We will always put Bolton first with actions, not just words.
