Conservative pressure secures commitment for no more illegal migrants in Bolton

We have always been committed to having discussions on contentious issues out in the public domain. Too many politicians hide behind phrases of ‘stoking community tensions’ or the fear of being branded ‘far-right.’ We disagree.

The more that politicians refuse to have open and honest conversations, no matter how difficult they may be, the more rumour, speculation, and extreme responses grow. That’s why we seek to avoid that.

Following on from reports from residents in Bolton about buildings that were allegedly to be taken over by Serco to house illegal migrants, we wanted to find out the truth. And only by bringing this into the public domain, we have finally started to get some answers.

We have now been able to have communication with Serco regarding Renaissance Apartments, who have now confirmed that Serco “will not be using the property to house asylum seekers.” We welcome Serco finally confirming their intention to not use this building.

In response to our further questions, Serco have been unable to confirm rough locations of properties already used in Bolton and are unwilling to tell us how many properties are being used as part of the illegal migrant contract they have with the government in Bolton.

However, our pressure and questions around future plans to settle illegal migrants in Bolton has been given a cautiously positive response. Serco have said “There are currently no plans to procure additional bedspaces across Bolton, but this is subject to change should we receive instruction from the Home Office.”

This is good and welcome news. However, with the decision being made by the Labour government in the Home Office, we will be holding Labour to account both locally and nationally. Bolton has always been a welcoming borough but it’s time other town and cities play their part.

As it stands, government data shows over 1,000 illegal migrants have been settled in Bolton and are receiving support for accommodation or subsistence. That is the third highest level in Greater Manchester and dramatically higher than the lowest settled borough, Trafford, which is supporting around 360 people.

We trust this gives reassurance to Boltonians who are rightly concerned about one of the biggest issues facing our country. And we remain committed to discussing this in an open and transparent way.
